Sam Mendes dirigirá la nueva película de James Bond

Los resultados de 007 Quantum of Solace (Quantum Of Solace, 2008) fueron tan contundentes, que los productores han buscado a un director prestigioso para encargarle la entrega número 23 de la franquicia del 007.

Durante años fueron monopolio de oscuros directores como el británico nacido en China Terence Young, el francés Guy Hamilton y los británicos Lewis Gilbert y John Glen, quienes se iban alternando las entregas aun cuando el actor que hiciera de James Bond ya no fuera el mismo. En la década de los noventa, cuando el neozelandés Martin Campbell –el que dio nueva vida a la franquicia de la mano de Pierce Brosnan– confirmó que no iba a dirigir la segunda película del actor irlandés como el agente 007, Barbara Broccoli y Michael G. Wilson, los nuevos propietarios de la franquicia más larga de la historia del cine, decidieron que tal vez era hora de probar suerte con directores que no estuvieran necesariamente especializados en el cine de acción. Así, convocaron al canadiense Roger Spottiswoode, al inglés Michael Apted y al neozelandés Lee Tamahori para que probaran su mano en los intensos rodajes de las películas de Bond.

Cuando llegó el momento de cambiarle el rostro, y el estilo, al fanático de los autos deportivos, las mujeres hermosas y los martinis secos, los productores volvieron a convocar a Campbell. Pero una vez que Daniel Craig fue aceptado por la audiencia como el nuevo Bond, Campbell volvió a marcharse. Los productores apostaron aún mas fuerte: convocaron al suizo Marc Forster para que se pusiera al frente del proyecto, un hombre suave.

Ante los resultados estéticos y económicos de 007 Quantum of Solace( Quantum Of Solace, 2008)  los productores han estado buscando a un director igualmente prestigioso y proveniente del cine de arte para encargarle la entrega número 23 de la franquicia del 007. Según fuertes rumores que no han sido confirmados ni por el propio interesado, ni por Broccoli ni tampoco por la MGM, el elegido para suceder a Forster es el inglés Sam Mendes, un hombre proveniente del teatro que ha dirigido multipremiadas películas como American beauty. El nuevo filme comenzaría a rodarse en junio basándose en un guión coescrito por el ganador del Oscar Peter Morgan, el de The Queen y Frost/Nixon, y el papel de Bond volvería a estar a cargo del muy eficiente Daniel Craig.

La noticia no ha sido precisamente celebrada por los críticos. Los Angeles Times se ha apresurado a señalar que, en términos de recaudación, la carrera de Mendes revela una continua decadencia. Su más reciente filme, Un lugar donde quedarse fue un rotundo fracaso. Otros, en cambio, contrarrestaron aduciendo que tanto Camino de perdición, con Tom Hanks y Paul Newman, como El infierno espera, con Jake Gyllenhaal, tenían abundantes escenas de acción que habían sido desarrolladas a la perfección por el director británico.

When the time came to change the face, and the style, the sports car fanatic, the beautiful women and the dry martinis, the producers called Campbell again. But once Daniel Craig was accepted by the audience as the new Bond, Campbell left again. The producers bet even stronger: they summoned the Swiss Marc Forster to put himself at the head of the project, a soft man.

Before the aesthetic and economic results of Quantum Of Solace (2008) producers have been looking for an equally prestigious director from the art cinema to order the 23rd installment of the 007 franchise. According to strong rumors that they have not been confirmed either by the interested party, Broccoli or MGM, the one chosen to succeed Forster is the Englishman Sam Mendes, a man from the theater who has directed multiple films such as American beauty. The new film would begin to shoot in June based on a script co-written by Oscar winner Peter Morgan, The Queen and Frost /Nixon, and the role of Bond would again be in charge of the highly efficient Daniel Craig.

The news has not exactly been celebrated by critics. The Los Angeles Times has been quick to point out that, in terms of revenue, Mendes' career reveals a continuing decline. His most recent film, A place to stay was a resounding failure. Others, on the other hand, countered by arguing that both Way of Perdition, with Tom Hanks and Paul Newman, and Hell Wait, with Jake Gyllenhaal, had plenty of action scenes that had been developed to perfection by the British director.
